Gift
Overview
Gift is a way of giving someone an asset without needing to know who they are first. Instead of addressing a transfer to a handle, you create a packet — an asset, an amount, a theme and a message — and share a link. Whoever opens the link claims it.
That makes Gift the right choice when the recipient is not on UNIT yet, when you are giving to several people, or when you want the moment of giving to feel like more than a transfer. If you already know the recipient's handle, Send is more direct.
Illustrations of the Gift screens will be added in a later revision of the guide. The explanation below describes the feature and its workflow.
What You Can See
- Asset and amount
- What the gift contains. The value is fixed when the gift is created, so the recipient receives what you intended regardless of when they claim it.
- Theme
- The visual finish of the gift card. A gift is presented as a card, not as a transaction.
- Message
- An optional note that travels with the gift and is shown to the recipient.
- Share link and QR code
- Created once the gift is funded. The link is what the recipient opens; the QR code is the same link for sharing in person.
- Share options
- Copy the link, share through your device, or send directly by WhatsApp, Telegram or email.
- Sent gifts
- The gifts you have created, and whether each has been claimed.
- Claim screen
- What the recipient sees when they open your link: who it is from, the asset, the amount and your message, before they claim.
Before You Begin
- The asset and amount you want to give, with enough available balance to cover it.
- A way to reach the recipient — a messaging app, email, or the ability to show them a QR code.
- Your message, if you want to include one.
How to Use This Screen
Create and share a gift
- Select Gift from the Wallet.
- Select the asset you want to give.
- Enter the amount. Check it against your available balance.
- Choose a theme for the gift card.
- Add a message if you want one. It is shown to the recipient with the gift.
- Confirm and fund the gift. The amount is committed at this point and the packet is created.
- The share link and QR code are generated. Copy the link, or choose a channel — WhatsApp, Telegram, email or your device's own share options.
- Send it to the recipient.
Claim a gift you have been sent
- Open the link you were sent, or scan the QR code.
- Check who the gift is from, which asset it contains and how much.
- Read the message, if the sender left one.
- Select the option to claim.
- The asset is credited to your wallet and appears in your balances.
Recover an unclaimed gift
- Open Gift and go to your sent gifts.
- Find the gift and check its status.
- If it has not been claimed, choose to refund it.
- The amount returns to your wallet.
What Happens Next
Once you have shared the link, the gift waits to be claimed. Your sent gifts list shows which have been claimed and which are still outstanding.
When the recipient claims, the asset moves to them. If a gift is never claimed, you can refund it and the value comes back to you. Gifts you create and gifts you claim both appear in History.
Tips
- Treat the link as the gift. Anyone who has it can claim it, so send it to the person you mean to give it to.
- Add a message. It is what makes a gift read as a gift rather than a payment.
- Check your sent gifts occasionally and refund anything that has gone unclaimed.
- Use a QR code when you are with the recipient — it avoids sending a link at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does the recipient need a UNIT account?
- They need one to claim the gift, but not to open the link and see what they have been sent.
- What happens if the gift is never claimed?
- It stays unclaimed until you refund it, and the value returns to you.
- Can I change the amount after creating a gift?
- No. The value is fixed when the gift is created. Refund it and create a new one instead.
- Can I send one gift to several people?
- A gift is claimed once. Create a separate gift for each recipient.
- How is this different from Send?
- Send goes to a known handle immediately. A gift goes to whoever opens the link, and is presented as a card with a message.
Troubleshooting
- The recipient says the link does not open
- Check the link was pasted in full — messaging apps sometimes truncate a long paste. Resend it, or show them the QR code instead.
- The gift shows as unclaimed
- The recipient has not opened and claimed it yet. Remind them, or refund the gift and give it another way.
- I sent the link to the wrong person
- If it has not been claimed, refund it straight away — that invalidates the link — and create a new gift.
- The available balance is insufficient
- Check whether the balance you were counting on is staked. Staked value cannot be used to fund a gift.
